That’s why we’d like to take a moment to talk about the real – according to us – secret to their success: great coffee.
We had the chance to talk with Philip, the managing director at 87 Seconds. He runs 87 Seconds together with Thibaut, the founder, to the delight of many.
Thibaut is a fan of pickle crisps and hates nonsense. He’s no newbie in the digital communications world, either. After founding 87 Seconds, Thibaut co-founded Illustrio, an image library that allows for icons, illustrations, and other graphics to be edited and customized. Philip has a background in communications as well. He is an avid soccer player, representing one of the many Futsal teams of our fine capital.
We asked Philip how coffee lifts his spirit. For him, coffee is an essential part of his daily ritual. If he doesn’t have any coffee to kickstart his mornings, he feels like he’s missing the boost his productivity needs in his creative work environment.
Beyond this, he explained how coffee is an important social primer for his interactions with others. Working with many smaller businesses and startup companies means that meetings are relatively informal. Rather than setting a strict timeframe for meetings, he usually suggests a chat about business over a cup of coffee. Coffee sets the scene for building relationships with others.
At what point in the day does he enjoy coffee the most? First: his morning coffee, which sets the tone for his entire day. Secondly: the first cup after lunch, which starts off the second half of his day in the same way that his morning cup does.
When we asked him about how he prepares his coffee, he told us that he doesn’t prepare his coffee in any fancy way; the automatic machine used in his office makes the process quick and easy. He admitted that in the morning, he actually forgoes using the espresso machine he has at home in favor of the higher quality coffee he can make at the office. In the end, he would really prefer to have his coffee prepared for him at a coffee bar by a barista, which we can’t blame him for!
We asked Philip to describe what his life would be like without coffee. It took him a few minutes to imagine such a nightmare. Without coffee, he wouldn’t have the energy to start any of his products, and he probably wouldn’t have made it through all of his studies (which were fueled by a lot of coffee when he procrastinated on his schoolwork!). Did coffee get him to where he is today? That may be a little drastic to say, but he definitely would be less productive and less energized without it.
